I also think experience is the best teacher and all the guys who are writing the books learned that way. But when you read the books, you can add some other experiences to your own, which I think has to add to your knowledge.

I do think you have to have some idea of starting hands that work on a mathematical basis. Lee Jones, Sklansky and many others cover that well. "Weighing the Odds in Hold Em Poker" by King Yao does the best specialized job of concentrating on the arithmetic.

I don't think you can win by knowing the arithmetic. I do think you can lose by not knowing the arithmetic. <G>

Unfortunately, all of the mathematical studies are for limit cash games.
