China builds own digital video broadcasting system

Chinese experts have yesterday approved a local sending-receiving system for digital video broadcasting system.

The system - based on a digital coding and decoding technology known as AVS - is backed by the country’s Information Ministry, and was co-researched by four institutions and companies based in Beijing and Shanghai.

The Xinhua News Agency quoted industry experts as saying with the approval of the technology, China has developed a comprehensive AVS-based digital system for video broadcasting that involves programme producing, broadcasting and receiving.

The technology includes innovations missing in the second-generation audio-video coding technology, which paves the way for China to participate in global competition and scale industrialisation of the technology.

According to experts, the system encompasses all the functions of digital video broadcasting while doubling or tripling the coding efficiency of MPEG-2 technology and reducing 30 to 50 percent computing cost.
