Etch, I did not say it couldn't be done...what I said was
at this time, it didn't make economic sense to move in that
direction. There is no compelling long term financial reason
for the industry, as a whole, to develop 450mm wafers/equipment. The
ROI to justify the upfront development expense is not viable
at this time. That's not to say that it might not be a
viable business opportunity in 10 years. It is necessary
that a mutually synergistic economic opportunity exist for
all involved. The most expensive production car in the world
is available (Bugatti Veyron), but not many are built
or sold, so it will be with 450mm equipment, IMO.
