Not for an optical drive, i.e CD or DVD drive. They are very shock sensitive, but even if they don't get bumped or dropped, they will just stop working.

Before you take it in to the shop, you might just try buying some canned air and cleaning the laser and the read head with it. You can also try buying a cleaning disk that has a little brush on it - it'll come with instructions. Try it with a CD you've copied before to make sure it's not the CD.
