I think we're talking about two different things. What you're calling "erosion," a bad thing, I'm calling "creative destruction," a good thing long term. My "destruction" is what the article was referring to when it spoke of flimsy or imaginary wealth growth and a lack of investment in skills.

Don't forget loss of benefits.
I know many people who have been layed off in recent years.
They found new work, but they are back to starting levels of vacation and a much reduced health care benefit.
