But seems doubtful that Sony would put something in that prevents playing anything.

Did you read the articles on the lawsuit?
The software that Sony slips on the computer can interact badly with your drivers.

I had a computer that quit playing CDs.
I eventually just let it sit on a program eject command until it timed out, maybe a minute or so and it cleared up. I don't know what that was.
