You covered a lot of intellectual ground in a short space there, John. My passion on this topic comes from a great admiration for the ideal that no group of people in power - even when elected democratically - should have the right in our system to abrogate that system at will. The Constitution and the people in whom it vests sovereignty get to make those decisions, not a politician on the right or the left. It's the only thing I know of that really keeps us free.
