re: I listened to a very interesting segment on NPR on rebuilding NO's hurricane defenses. Some private engineers think it will take 5 years, some think it will take 20 years. The Army Corps of Engineers say they've got a "can do attitude" and can do it in ONE year.

Frankly, they are in a gambling situation. Do you do it half assed in one year, and hope that a major hurricane doesn't hit next summer. Or do you do it right, and hope that no hurricanes hit for the next five+ years during the project?

The pols know if another hurricane hits NO next year (unlikely but not impossible) and they have done nothing, they will be toast.
