You might try blowing it out but it's hard to clean the lens if it's got something on it. I think you have to disassemble the drive to get to it to clean it with denatured alcohol. Of course, it's shot anyway so it's worth a try.

If it was working and then it quit, I think it's broke. My experience with dirt is it comes on gradually before it dies completely.
