If McCain can win the first few primaries and develop the overwhelming momentum that wins a nomination, he could tack to the center with rhetoric like that and convince a lot of people in the middle that there is such a thing as genuine compassionate conservatism, instead of the shell game we have now.

Someone like Warner could do that on the Democratic side, but it would be risky. Hillary will dominate the debate with old-fashioned Republican bashing (judging by her speeches lately) and make it hard for other themes to emerge.

That's my guess. Still very, very early days. Just wishful thinking on my part, perhaps.
