Let's count the bodies

Yes, it is important not to get caught in grand visions of planetary disasters while things, in fact, may not be all that bad. I understand your point about looking at things in perspective. However, last century we had an opportunity to learn how old ideas (with a totalitarian potential) may from time to time come back and gain energy and lead to big trouble. And also to big body counts.

That's what happened when Marxism eventually became reality under Stalin. Nazis felt that the Judeo-Christian tradition was repressing the true nature of the free powerful Arian man. By the time they were able to build an empire based on that grand vision, the body count was way, way up.

Extreme Islamism has all the ingredients it needs in order to capture political power -- it plays on old traditions and emotions which find resonance among the masses. The movement is becoming increasingly focused and effective.

The 9/11 attack was designed to serve a political purpose - Jihadists expect that by stirring up waters - and triggering (perceived) tensions between Muslims and "Crusaders" - they may be able to gain popularity, while pushing the Muslim world towards increasing radicalism.

It's All About Religion, Stupid...... ;)

And also about power. And about super-big ideas... and other "human" stuff, which technology so far was unable to change.

Oldie but goodie - an article about Sayyid Qutb:
