I was a kid when McCarthy was active. I've never found him particularly admirable, but I suspect he was maligned much more than he deserved.

I know you can come up with loads of ______ [fill in the blank], but what I want you to come up with is one person who was materially damaged by McCarthy.

I'm not defending McCarthy. I'm holding your feet to the fire, as they say.

McCarthy is remembered not for his incompetent Senate career (his council, Roy Cohn, was the driving force behind the anti-communist movement that McCarthy gets credit for), but for the enemies he made.

Tail Gunner Joe was the first post-war politician to get our embedded domestic enemy to expose itself, transparently, for all the world to see.

Those of us who have followed that domestic enemy from their original status of "a few crazy Stalinists in New York" to the movement that threatens thousands (or even millions) of American lives today, are surprised only at the number of people who are seeing them for the first time for what they are...
