Privacy isn't the equivalent of liberty, it is (for me) a part of my liberty, one of the conditions that allows it, and the erosion of any of those conditions threatens me in various ways.

A subset is fully contained within, subsumed by, the set, actually or conceptually. The relationship between privacy and liberty is not that. Loss of privacy may be a precursor to loss of liberty. Or it may create an environment that enables loss of liberty, as Tim suggested. Or it may be a frequent underpinning of loss of liberty. Or it may be an uncomfortable feeling that we exaggerate into a perception of loss of liberty. It ain't a subset. IMHO, of course. <g>

Of course, I still balance my checkbook. :)

Well that explains everything. Extreme risk aversion. Or anal retentiveness. Or habit. Or poverty. Or lots of time on your hands... <g>
