We've been through this kind of shiite before, such as during the McCarthy paranoia (which I was too young to remember), and eventually people did come to their senses, or at least enough did.

What is scary is how long certain individuals, like J. Edgar had been able to stay on the job though, despite the manifest corruption.

By the way, it's well to remember that the government has *always* abused freedoms on the side from time to time - what is new here is that a president of the United States openly condones this sort of thing.
