re: It started before 9/11. It started back in 2000, during the election and controversy over FLA. It became clear then that these people would do whatever it took to gain power. And they have..........

Frankly, I think Gore et al would have done anything as well.

I disagree. In fact, he backed down when he shouldn't have. And he backed down because Rove spun it like the govt' was out of control.....there was no one to lead us, bla bla bla. Instead of responding in fear, all anyone had to do was pick up a book on the Constitution and read just what were the provisions for governance in such a case. No one did....instead there was a lot of hand wringing.....people running around claiming the sky was falling.

No. Gore was not the same. His reponse was typically American.......you put nation ahead of your well being. Bush and company were a different animal from the get go. Their success was more important to them than the American democracy. I thought so then; I know it now. That's why this is such a dangerous time.

But from a broader perspective, you may be right. That may have been the tipping point when the rule of law broke down. Bush and company certainly don't embrace the "rule of law"; they are working to outfox it at every opportunity.

It wasn't that the rule of law broke down.....it was ignored. I suspect from what CJ has told us that it had been ignored for years before Bush ran for president. They've played into the complacency that is typically American.........our democracy is solid; it can not be toppled. Even you think they are just playing politics albeit dirty; that Gore and every other politician is the same way. I believe that to be a very wrong takeaway although after 5 years of slime, its not surprising that everything looks dirty to us.

Forget that the unwarrented wiretapping is considered illegal and unAmerican........not only are they not repentent, they are using the strategy that a good defense is a strong offense. They've have gone on the attack and DARING to condemn the people who have released the information to the public and DARING to criticize Congress for not passing the Patriot Act extension, the granting powers of which has encouraged their belief that every law is made to be broken.

IMO these are very bad times and I worry that we can't stop them.
