Not too long ago, they set Saddam up.

First, Saddam was supported by the US and other interested parties to become their strong man and "a stabilising force in the Middle East." Several photos showed Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam in Baghdad. Then "Rummy" gave Saddam nerve gas which the latter used on the Kurds, and also on the Iranians to fight them to a draw. You see, the US wanted to stop the Iranians before things got worse and the Iranian Shiites succeed in exporting their Shiite Revolution westward into Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Otherwise, the security of the US vested interets in Saudi Arabia was threatened and might even be lost.

Next, after Saddam did his thing and supposedly got rid of his enemies, he was systematically demonized and public opinion was marshalled in favour of ousting him for a regime change. Well, all that has happened, and now it looks like history is going to repeat itself with Ahmadinejad!
