MM, I like to be negative. Too many people are pollyanish positive thinking. It's unbalancing the world, resulting in irrational exuberance, only to be brought back to reality again when the four forces of the apocalypse inevitably correct errors. Unfortunately, the irrationally "positive people" drag everyone else down with them. If they'd crash and burn alone, it would be much better.

Plus it's easier to stop doing silly things that are harmful than it is to come up with something better to try to overcome the faults. Things need to be done right to make progress.

I suppose I'm exaggerating somewhat. It stemmed from the nuclear-free zone and back in the 1980s when the USA got quite snarky and was treating the USSR better than they were treating NZ, one of the best allies the USA will ever have.
