Carbon monoxide poisons children in car

SYRACUSE, N.Y. Police say two Syracuse children were rescued yesterday morning after they passed out from exposure to carbon monoxide in a running car.
The boys five-year-old Chris Stevens and two-year-old and Devon Stevens were sitting in a car in the driveway of their home while their mother brushed snow off the car.

About 10 minutes later, 28-year-old Tara Stevens looked into the car to see her children slumped over. Police say she called 9-1-1 immediately.

The children were taken to a hospital where they received 90-minute sessions in a hyperbaric chamber, which delivers highly concentrated oxygen.

Firefighters say a piece of the exhaust system was missing and the exhaust was coming out from where the holes in the floorboards were.

A reading showed the carbon monoxide level in the car reached the highest level detectable by the meters within 30 seconds.

Firefighters figured the actual level was probably double that, creating a potentially deadly situation.
