Peter, You have hit on the major problem with many of the tribes. There are progressive members that get a good education, and become assets to the entire tribe, but the vast majority is still kind of like the local yokel. The foothold that the educated ones have, should spread out to the rest of the tribe as a few generations pass.

The Lhakota were proud warriors in the past, and they have not yet conquered the shame they feel for being led around by the nose by white men. "Wounded Knee" crushed their spirit.

Those, of any tribe, that have become alcoholics, are easy targets for unprincipled politicians. Like dope addicts, they will do anything for a fix.

The best book I have ever read about the Indians to the west of the Mississippi, is "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee".
