I would agree that it becomes more urgent that retirement vehicles be portable. But social security isn't the only portable vehicle. No, but as the durability of jobs becomes much more contingent, as protections against age related job firings declines, and as pensions get defined by contributions rather than end point benefits, there needs to be a floor which is a collective floor, not an individual floor, something provides some protection, however minimal, for everyone in old age.
