It was incredible, but keep in mind that Canadian fur trader Alexander MacKenzie was ahead of them by 10 years! He led a party from Lake Athabasca down the Slave and MacKenzie Rivers to the Arctic coast in 1789. And from Lake Athabasca up the Peace River and over the Rockies to the Pacific coast in 1793. He published a book about these trips in 1801, and Thomas Jefferson sent a copy along with the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1803...
