WASHINGTON (AFX) - President Bush launched a strong defense of the administration's secret surveillance program as a necessary new weapon in the war on terror

In an hour-long press conference at the White House on Monday, Bush said the wiretapping of overseas telephone and email messages without court approval was necessary for quick action against suspected terrorists

"To save American lives, we must be able to act fast and to detect these conversations so we can prevent new attacks," Bush said

The president repeated his assertion made this weekend that the wiretapping program was consistent with U.S. law and the Constitution

In a flash of anger, Bush called a Senate vote on Friday that blocked extension of the Patriot Act "inexcusable." He indicated that he would press Senators to reconsider their votes

There was little discussion of the economy at the press conference
