How short are the boots on the ground military from being where they really should be? I know they've reduced their recruiting goals at least twice.

Here is my assessment of current numbers. They are not surprising. Enlistments and reenlistments have dropped in the third year of every other war. We are getting a taste at the end of the 4th year of this one. I would point out that Army strength is still 5,000+ above Clinton's low point.

Overall DOD active duty strength dropped another 6,000 in Oct.

The US Army lost 2,300 to 490,396. That is down 8,200 in a year. The Army is now 52,004 men short of the current authorized troop level of 512,400 plus the additional 30,000 that were authorized but never could be recruited.

Recent Army news releases stated they met active duty enlistment goals in October. The % of reenlistments did drop after riding a wave of recent record highs.
