I dont have much time to go into this in depth right now. Iraqi sunni and kurds are largely secular and the shiaa have a significant secular component. Your argument is possible or probable depending in how one analyses the current situation. I have always been more hopeful than you but you have been more right than I have (to date). So dont get arrogant on me Ed (g) and at least hope that in 2006 the democratic myth becomes in some fashion an iraqi reality. Perfect never, but better than saddam, baathists or the terrorist for sure. I am willing to bear the bad news for one more year. I will be greatly disappointed if it doesnt work out. I insist that timetables or timetables by any other name be laid out so the iraqis know whats at steak if they take the insurgents and particularly the terrorists seriously. mike

Is Bush drawing down in Afghanistan (as Nato comes in) because:

1. he thinks it's hopelessly spinning towards civil war and even more chaos and he wants to be able to blame NATO for it?

2. he believes that Karzai (aka the mayor of kabul) being kinda sorta in place is enough of a fig leaf and he needs more troops in Iraq so he has no choice.

3. he knows OBL is dead and is no longer interested in what happens in Afghanistan.
