hello cb, on gold and hurricanes, if the old friend of yours had enough gold and in the correct locales, and was not a good/generous/altruistic person, he could have just scooted to nyc, stayed at the peninsula, said hi to condi rice at the opera or shoe store, nodded at tom delay in some chic restaurant, and then get back to new orleans to buy up prime locations even as he cuts himself in for some fed-sponsored reconstruction contract

otoh, if he had gold in his backyard, and anyone nasty knew about it, he would be not in a good position

on generosity and altruism, i figure generosity is someone with a billion giving away 500 million, and altruism is someone with 100 and giving away 50.

the kid who fetched the backpack, his parents are good people, and taught him well, i observed since when he was born, which only seemed like a few years ago

on gold, it is really quite mysterious and yet so simple, can be taken at so many levels; it has no correct price, and so, as an object of speculation, has no proper value

chugs, j

CB you're right. Houses are becoming bigger! You wrote a while ago and someone disputed your figures.

But you're right.

Average Home Size (NAHB) Is Growing:

1950: 963 ft around 89m2
1970: 1,500 ft around 139m2
2005: 2,400 ft around 223m2

Average Lot Size (NAHB) Is Shrinking

1980: 9,000 ft around 836m2
2005: 8,000 ft around 743m2

...

Its not just the size thats increasing in new construction, more amenities are being added.

This trend tends to overshadow pricing in the housing market. Larger housing skews the overall market statistics, both median sales price and average sales price, so the rise in prices would be overstated.
