In my conspiratorial moments, I wonder whether Bush is not returning the loyalty by appearing to play bad cop/good cop with McCain over the torture issue. If McCain does run in 2008, I'm pretty sure that will feature positively on his resume. I does not cost Bush much to assist the GOP in that manner.

I've decided there are multiple McCains. One is as you say, bonded brother of Bush. But there is the free swinging, I'll tell you like it is. And there are others.

I'm working on a theory as to which will appear under which conditions.
