Peter, The main reason FDR was elected, was because he promised the end of prohibition. While the depression brought down Hoover, it was not pivotal to getting FDR elected, even though he promised a car in every garage, and a chicken in every pot.

Most, if no all, of the programs he started gave men ditch digging type of work with barely enough in wages to be enough for a hot meal for a family. There was no way these workers could better themselves.

The worst thing he did was promise security from the cradle to the grave, ergo the Social Security Act, at the insistence of Eleanor. That removed the intention of citizens to plan for their own future, and made them pawns of the government.

FDR, being a democrat, could do no wrong in their eyes, but Bush being a republican is a totally different story as far as they are concerned. They have no room to bitch about party politics.
