People were buying condos for their kids at college 20 years ago in Austin around the University of Texas. Local builders were flattening groups of houses to build 'em where they couldn't convert some apt's, and local RE sharks were marketing them to the parents through the students by making claims like "the appreciation will put your kid through college"! The students would go to their parents and "But MOOOM! (think Eric Cartman). Most of the time, this seemed to actually work out well for the buyers as I recall.

Contrast that with MY parents, who promised to buy me a car AFTER I graduated from college! I had my own car before I was out of high school..
