Peter, Ending prohibition was one of the promises he made if elected. That, really, was not all bad. The mob boot leggers had wreaked havoc in the nation, and repeal would put them out of that particular business. Prohibition didn't stop anybody from drinking the spirits. I was told about the area in south central Texas, where I spent the longest time in my life, that home made beer was readily available. The only problem was, that they put the aging bottles of beer under their houses to hide them, and in summer time, they could hear the corks popping off like fire crackers.

I agree that low wages were better than no wages, but didn't add much to the economy, or the recovery there of.

A long time ago, an old man, probably no older than I am now, who had experience in DC during the time, told me that Eleanor had planned out a social security system, and with some changes, FDR got it through Congress. I assumed that was true, but assuming is not always a good thing to do.

The democrats to not cease to make me wonder. FDR had a Congress that, I think, was well into the pockets of the democrats, and anything he did was alright with him, but they are still mad about the election of Bush, and look for anything they can nit pick about. War is not a pretty thing, and in order to win, we need information that those prisoners have. If it takes torturing, so be it. They don't hesitate to torture our people, and even chop their heads off with their swords.
