The Church in the middle ages took a very dim view of negative numbers as well. I forget all the details, but it was a very subversive concept for some time. Eventually its use in science became apparent. Its use today in economics is under appreciated IMO.

If your estate has assets, those are your assets and you dispose of them as you see fit by designating heirs.

That is much of the basis for feudalism.

The period in which it was predominate was called the dark ages for good reason.
