Also, the Iraqi elections, whether successful or not, should give Bush an excuse to pull out quick. He should define election success to be holding elections in a peaceful manner which has already occured.

But do you think the neocons are that smart? I ask that since I see a master neocon Cheney supporting things like torture, secret surveillance etc.

Chris. You said...."Iraq is disintegrating. The first results from the parliamentary election last week show the country is dividing between Shia, Sunni and Kurdish regions."....

The country was divided this way when sadam was in power and sadam and the sunni's controlled by force the Kurds and the Shia's. Difference now is that all sides have a chance to sort things out in a democratic manner....Will they? remains to be seen.

You said...Religious fundamentalists now have the upper hand. The secular and nationalist candidate backed by the US and Britain was humiliatingly defeated."....

IMO that is what this is all about. Providing an opportunity for religious factions to iron out their differences through democratic means. will it work? From voter turn out it appears that the people of Iraq would like to make changes to their country. will the religious nuts be able to live in a society with more freedom? This area has been controlled by religious nut balls for a couple of thousand years....change will be a very tough sell.

As for allwi...that's exactly what should happen in a free and democratic vote....the people decide their future.

You said...."The election marks the final shipwreck of American and British hopes of establishing a pro-Western secular democracy in a united Iraq."....

Come on Chris you know that no one in the Bush administration is that stupid.... all that area of the Middle east ever has known is islam. everything there revolves around islam same as Afghanistan islam dominated. they know nothing else.

IMO it was always believed that islam would be the dominate factor in a new Iraq government. there is no other choice. Turkey is muslim controlled yet have democratic elections.

I think the hope is that Iraq can have an islam government that is elected and friends with the Western world and that would be a big step in the right direction. IMO
