They could square up without actually selling, ie, selling calls, buying poots, etc and reduce exposure, while maintaining the actual position.

exactly. that is my point. If 2 bid hedge funds are squeezing Lend higher and they own a combined 40% or more of the stock, they can't possibly liquidate their positions prior to year-end to lock up the gains.

If they are executing a short squeeze at this point, I think they have every intention of running the stock higher into 12/31. They care far more about a high mark to market than locking in the gain prior to year-end.
