To an extent I was mentally putting myself in the place of some middle class person in NO who didn't have flood insurance.

I realized what you were doing. I have trouble putting myself in their place. I would simply not have bought a home any place risky plus I would have it insured. I can't identify with anyone doing otherwise. I won't even buy a home on a gas line let alone below sea level. Like I said, I don't have earthquake insurance. So if I get felled by one, I won't have anyone to blame but myself.
