My eight year old is going on her first fishin' trip in about a week. I promised her she could pick a reward for math achievement if she met or passed her goals. She picked 'fishing trip' as a reward from the dream list she keeps.

The teachers at her school insisted that she is a below average math student when she started the third grade as a 7 year old. I remarked only that they should not be fooled by her lack of cognitive maturity. She is also very small and shy in large groups (43 lbs).

At mid year parent conferences I brought examples of the math work that she does at home. The teacher in charge, put my contribution under her elbow (eyes rolling) and continued with her presentation... again insisting that my daughter is a below average 3rd grade math student, adding... with distractability problems. One of the teachers wondered out loud if she might have a learning disability.

Last Saturday I took my daughter to a private institute for accelerated students to be tested on math ability. They gave her the CBTS test. Its a standardized achievement test like the Iowa Basic Skills test.

The examiners were floored when she topped out on their test. She is eight now but because of her size she could pass for a five year old. My daughter topped out on the test they gave her that went up to 7th grade 2nd month (7.2). The examiner asked me if I wanted to have her tested at the next higher increment of test, which would go up to High School level. The kid was looking tired so I declined.

They are sending me a report that ranks my daughter as 7.2+ in ability, and I know just where I'm gonna stick it.
