Actually, Lynn Margulis is one of the most original thinkers in her field - biology. She came up with the idea that the mitochondria found in living cells originated as separate creatures and were incorporated into cells.

She sees evolution, which she defines as simply "change over time" as being driven mostly by cooperation and consolidation of living entities via symbiotic relationships. Her SET is taught in school textbooks alongside natural selection.

Fortunately for her, she is a philosophical materialist and says a consistent scientific world view must reject the existence of any and all supernatural beings. So her non-opthodoxy is okay.

I'd encourage people with strong opinions on the subject to read something besides newspaper articles - Lynn Margulis's Symbiotic Planet is a good short not too technical book. Michael Behe's Darwin's Black Box is the best thing to read about intelligent design.

I see a lot of strongly held opinions, accepted obviously based on "expert authority", and very little knowledge of trends in biology frankly.
