BUSINESS TICKER: NORTH AMERICA: Positive drug trial result sends Nuvo shares soaring Shares in Nuvo Research Inc. shot up 72 per cent yesterday after the company reported a preliminary finding that its Pennsaid ointment is effective against knee pain from osteoarthritis. The preliminary analysis came after a Phase III efficacy and safety trial for Pennsaid, a topical non-steroid anti-inflammatory approved for sale in Canada and several European countries. The trial was designed with the input of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to answer deficiencies noted in a "non-approvable" letter issued by the FDA in August, 2002. Full analysis of the study will be announced in January. NRI (TSX) rose 13 cents to 31 cents. CP
