Self-interest is natural where altruism is culturally indoctrinated

Altruism is most certainly an evolutionary trait, and therefore quite natural. Part of the reason I think most of Ayn's epistomology is hogwash it that it was developed without a good understanding of mental processes, or modern biology for that matter. She was convinced that there was a totally different process for human minds vs. animal minds. Her entire fascination with rational thought is predicated on this. We still have a long ways to go, but most of what was thought about mental activity in 1950 is not going to be correct in 2050.

Regarding my comment on Ayn as a philosophical antidote per Wienberg, I found this in Wikipedia under Objectivism:

Rand regarded her philosophical efforts as the beginning of the correction of a deeply troubled world, and she believed that the world has gotten into its present troubled state largely through the uncritical acceptance, by both intellectuals and others, of traditional philosophy.

I nearly died laughing!
