Debt is an asset as long as you are confident you'll be paid back, so I guess I'm questioning whether the US intends to pay back the full value of its debt. The dollar is in itself a debt instrument, backed by nothing but a promise. Since so much of US debt is now owned by foreigners, it's increasingly advantageous to debase the currency.
