How many computers do you administer? I think anybody who is responsible for a significant data center is concerned about electricity costs.

JMHO.

Computers don't use jack of electricity. That's a dead end & you nailed it.

There is an entire industry built around energy cost savings. Put "Energy Management System" into google for a rough idea of who the players are. It's *big* business. It's not an IT thing, though... it's typically part of facilities management.

If I've 10,000 servers and I can cut their use from 200 watts to 100 watts each, I've not only saved 1 megawatt of electricity, I've reduced my HVAC load by 1 megawatt. You can bet that the IT managers have heard plenty from their facilities managers that this would be a good thing.

The short period I worked in the energy management industry we had companies excited when we could reduce the energy requirements of their lighting by 10-20%. All they wanted was an equipment payback of 12-24 months.
