I've seen five-year old kids wearing handgun earings. I've heard two youths talking about how "you've got to shoot first" while other passengers and myself squirm uncomfortably that this sort of conversation could be going on in Canada. I've heard youths talking together fantasizing about killing their teacher. I've heard one fellow threaten the life of the bus driver because the door wouldn't open because he didn't step on the bottom step triggering it. What I've seen tells me that a large part of the problem all boils down to a handgun-loving, tough guy subculture that we have imported from elsewhere. This is not polically correct to say, but have a look at the crime rates and the subcultures of violence that exists in certain parts of the world and look at the demographics of the areas in Toronto that have the worst crime. Those who live in Toronto can take an educated guess what I am talking about. The blame for many of the shootings we see in Toronto lay at the feet of the politicians who designed an immigration system that led to this. In particular, a lot of immigrants came in as cheap labour to pick fruit in the 70's because people on welfare weren't interested and the wages were too cheap for most Canadians. To satisfy a farming lobby, decades later one might say we have been getting our "Just Desserts". We had lots of family class immigration grown out of that, and the mess of an immigration system totally out of control in the 1980s starting with Barbara McDougall. Immigration is a serious issue. When you import large numbers of people from troubled areas of the world, some of their troubles can come with them, and unlike guests at a party, you can't just ask people or their kids to leave if they misbehave (although the Toronto police have been trying to see the worst criminals deported -- often only to see them come right back on entertainment visas or with phoney ids).
