The Empire State Building was sold to a Japanese billionaire in 1991 but I lived in an area of the country referred to as the Inland Empire. Maybe we should we be the Empire States of America. -g-

Yea, that works... other than that there are quite a few definitions that better describe the US than empire. As I said, no political scientist would think of using that to describe the situation in the US.
