Peter,

I export a fair percentage of my product to the US...do the NAFTA dance and all that....$5.00 US to clear customs on shipments up to $2000.00 if I clear it at the border myself and there is no GST on these purchases made by my American customers. I usually do some taxfree shopping at a store in a border community that welcomes me by having two drawers in their cash registers (one for US cash and one for Can) on the way back home.

On a recent trip I returned with a large ticket item and had to pay GST to Canada Customs. I tried to tell the customs worker I was Liberian but it made no difference.
