That would require an extemely bi-modal distribution. While I think the income distribution has grown increasingly skewed thanks to our new regressive tax system and the unethical thieves running many of the S&P500 for their own personal gain, I don't think the distribution is that whacky.

Statistically speaking, means are skewed towards long tails, but medians pretty much ignore outliers. They only fail to be representative if the distribution is completely abnormal.
