one could turn around your argument and just say that gold really appreciated in dollar terms but not in global terms.

The price of gold is higher because central banks are reducing gold sales and some have announced that they will be adding them to their reserves, increased demand and anticipated demand of china and india, and investor recognition that gold and silver should be part of a long term investment portfolio. Moreover, increased production costs will constrict output. You are right about the the SA mines. i dont own them, and they have closed down a lot of capacity because the rising costs have made the mines uneconomical. In fact if not for the surge in copper prices there would be even less operating mines. I like EDVMF, which i mentioned on this thread months ago, and NTO for the long term.
