It's not actually possible to handle a personal injury case pro bono, unless you can persuade doctors and other expert witnesses to testify for free, and court reporters to take depositions for free, and so forth.

The costs alone in a personal injury case will range from a low of $10K to a high in hundreds of thousands, depending on the facts and the number of expert witnesses and so forth.

We're allowed to advance fees if we believe that we will ultimately prevail. That keeps us honest.

I don't expect you or anybody else outside the system to understand or care. It's enough for me that the people who referee the legal system on a daily basis, the judges, understand and appreciate this fact.
