I personally care quite a bit if my laptop is 32 or 64 bit. My present laptop (Dell XPS Gen2) cannot handle Cakewalk Sonar X64 which isn't very helpful in my case. Over the next few years other desirable and more mainstream software will fall into that category. I also would like more than 2GB of memory which obviously only 64 bit systems will accommodate.

No disagreement about Windows. However, as some key software I use only runs on it, I don't have much of a choice. I do run Debian Linux on my laptop as well.
