November Semiconductor Shipments continue to Rise; 2006 Should be another growth year for Semis - C.E. Unterberg

C.E. Unterberg notes semiconductor shipments in November grew 7.2% Y/Y and 1.7% M/M to a record $20.4 billion (3-mo. rolling average) according to the Semiconductor Industry Association data released over the past weekend, continuing an accelerating trend since the July trough. With one more month of data to report for 2005, the firm believes that 2005 semiconductor shipments are on-track to hit the SIA's mid-November forecast of about 7% Y/Y, or about $228B, and near the mid-point of the firm's forecast of 5-10% at the beginning of 2005. The firm forecasts 7-11% Y/Y sales growth for the industry in 2006, as pricing will likely be markedly stronger across most segments of the industry compared to 2005. The firm expects semiconductor shipments will continue to improve on a Y/Y basis and on an absolute basis through most of 2006. With fab utilization levels near 95% in Q4'05, and relatively modest capital expenditure across the industry in 2005, the firm thinks capacity will be tight through much of 2006, resulting in a benign pricing environment in 2006 and healthy revenue growth for the industry.
