Crimson > BTW were not Jews a leading a force in the South African anti-apartheid movement even while Israel was cooperating closely with the apartheid regime?

Yes, but very few, in fact very few whites supported the anti-apartheid movement until it became fashionable to do so. That was when the US liberals took over the cause and motivated for sanctions. Until then, only the USSR and Cuba supported the "struggle". Of course, there were always a few staunch white Communists in the ANC and most were in fact Jewish. Those have now largely been gotten rid of as the ANC has transformed from a Marxist movement into an avaricious, black capitalist set-up. Indeed, Bush calls Mbeki, "Our man in Africa".

I would say the position now between SAn whites and Israel is ambivalent. While most whites, I imagine, would still tacitly support Israel many, especially intellectuals, consider Israel to be an "apartheid state". You have to remember now that SA has transformed into a non-racial democracy, it is no longer fashionable for whites, including Jews, to openly identify with apartheid. Adding to this dilemma, there are many Muslims in positions of authority in the government, business and the universities who would not like to hear support for a nation they consider to be a pariah.
