ST, you are misinformed. 3GSM is CDMA, aka W-CDMA and that's what has been specified for Europe's 3G cyberphone technology.

I am right now raking in many $millions from Europeans buying QUALCOMM CDMA technology. What's even more fun is that their phones are often dual-mode, with W-CDMA/GSM so I collect a royalty on the GSM components and cost as well as the W-CDMA bits and pieces.

<Somebody, who unlike me knows something, told me the other day that the reason one can't phone anywhere in the world with CDMA is that the European telecom companies have blocked it. He said that's why CDMA is much more popular in the Far East; no vested interest opposes it there.>

They were probably referring to what's called 2G, which was GSM/TDMA/PHS/CDMA and indeed, there were no CDMA services in Europe which forced everyone to use GSM. Which isn't to say that one couldn't call Europeans from a CDMA phone in a country with CDMA services. Plenty of GSM phones didn't work in other countries either as they were on different frequencies.

Increasingly, phones are multimode and multiband.

Meanwhile, since October 1999, announced at Telecom99 in Geneva, CDMA has been in service in Europe in the form of Globalstar, albeit for only a few thousand people. Check out Globalstar coverage: globalstar.com That's all CDMA.

Canadian should have a Globalstar phone, because it's so dangerous in winter if one gets stuck in the snow in the bush on a snowmobile. Plus, for convenience, one is always in communication. Check it out in Canada. It's cheaper than you probably think and gives very good quality voice. globalstar.ca

ST, here's a link to Samsung announcing another CDMA development for Europe, samsung.com,

Note that QUALCOMM is already selling W-CDMA [aka 3GSM, or 3G] ASICs in Europe and is collecting royalties on all of them sold by other companies. This is a new technology which will give QUALCOMM even more advantage.

BTW, when I wrote that I was raking in $millions from Europe, I meant me, via my company, QUALCOMM Incorporated - my share of those $millions is small.

HSDPA is W-CDMA on steroids. It operates on the same 3G networks.

<Korea – December 28, 2005: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a leading provider and innovator of mobile phones, announced today introduction of High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) phones for the first time in Europe through cooperation with Vodafone, the largest mobile operator, and Qualcomm, a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies.

Samsung, Vodafone and Q ualcomm, all at the top of their respective fields in creating wireless products, services, and complete system solutions, have been closely working together since 2003 to bring high-speed, affordable wireless access to the market earlier than expected .

Samsung is currently developing the first commercially available HSDPA phone to be launched exclusively for Vodafone and plans to demonstrate the technology at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2006 in Las Vegas .

Qualcomm' s Mobile Station Modem ™ (MSM™) with integrated multimedia capabilities helped Samsung to introduce the HSDPA-capable mobile phone ahead of schedule.

Kitae Lee, president of Samsung Electronics' Telecommunication Network, said “Samsung is proud to commercialize HSDPA technology with Vodafone and Qualcomm, opening up a variety of multimedia applications at quicker speeds and lower costs.” He added, “Samsung is known for providing innovative handsets that harmonize the latest features and unique form factors and we will continue such innovations in our HSDPA phone line-up.”

Peter Bamford, Chief Marketing Officer of Vodafone said “Our continuing collaboration with Samsung will provide customers with high quality mobile phones which will enhance their current experience of 3G services.”

“We are pleased to be part of these efforts that have resulted in the commercialization of HSDPA technology for Vodafone's subscribers,” said Dr. Sanjay K. Jha, president of Q ualcomm CDMA Technologies. “Samsung's mobile phone enabled by Q ualcomm technology brings new multimedia and data services to wireless users in Europe , and we look forward to further collaborations that will make these next-generation capabilities a reality for people around the world.”

HSDPA technology offers breakthrough data speeds. By delivering low cost, rich content applications, customers can enjoy a variety of multimedia services including higher speed internet access and video sharing.

Currently, Samsung is a major mobile phone provider for Vodafone's 3G and GSM/GPRS services. Thanks to the established partnership between Samsung, Vodafone, and Qualcomm, all parties can enrich customers' multimedia experiences with a true next generation service for the first time in Europe . ...continued...
