It has been suggested that the Abramoff and Fitzpatrick investigations will likely be curtailed because to take them to their conclusion would upset the political balance.

Who has suggested this? With the anymosity and leaks existing today, it would be surprising if the investigation was curtailed.

re: Don't get me wrong, the repercussions will be severe, but allowing it to continue will be worse. Ignoring it will just ensure that we will no longer be as much of a democracy as we are now. And we have a inflection point, it is still possible to change things. The system won't be as vulnerable for much longer.

I agree, this could be the "last chance" to significantly clean up the systems. And I'm not sure how confident I am that it will happen; you have mostly complacent, uninformed citizens, a press corp that just reads talking points from press releases, a "Republican right" and President that believes their end justifies any means, both houses of congress and the executive on the same side, and a USSC that is tilting the same direction. Rule of law is breaking down; just look at the folks on this thread that support the criminals as long as they are their criminals.

2006 should be interesting, hopefully not in a Chinese curse sort of way.
